Nick was among the fastest cars in practice, however as the track warmed up, the car loosened up for qualifying and Nick posted the 15th fastest lap. As is always the case in the Southwest Series, the field is extremely competitive and Tucson was no exception as the top 15 cars pretty much ran nose to tail for the majority of the race. Nick quickly moved to the 11th position by lap 15, however a loose race car made it difficult to pass on the tricky 3/8 mile track. Nick moved up to the 7th position when the final caution flew at lap 140. Throughout the race, Nick was running lap times similar to the leader as were the top 15 cars.
On the final restart with four laps remaining, the car in front of Nick missed a shift, forcing Nick to check up and allowed the car behind to pull along side. The two battled side by side and both made a move to the inside of the 6th place car for a three wide battle. Nick nosed ahead going into turn 3 on the final lap, when the car behind tapped Nick in the rear causing him to get loose. That car moved to the inside of Nick and the four cars battled four wide to the finish with Nick finishing about 2 feet short of 6th place and a foot ahead of 9th place as just a fender length separated the four cars at the finish.
Nick now heads to Phoenix International Raceway for the final event of the season and hopes for a little luck to make up the 116 points he needs to finish 10th in the Standings and earn a spot in the All Star Showdown in November.
